Arvada, CO, USA - May 13, 2024

In a proactive effort to preserve the ecological balance of local waterways, Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) successfully eradicated 14 invasive bighead carp from the Jack B Tomlinson Park pond in Arvada on Wednesday. Acting on a tip from a vigilant member of the public, CPW aquatic biologists swiftly responded, employing electrofishing methods to apprehend the nuisance species.

The removal operation targeted bighead carp, members of the Asian carp family, which pose a significant threat to native ecosystems due to their voracious appetite for plankton. These invasive fish, introduced to Colorado waters in 1992 as part of a national study, can outcompete native species for resources, disrupting the delicate balance of aquatic ecosystems.

"Bighead carp are filter feeders capable of rapid growth, posing a formidable challenge to native species," explained CPW Invasive Species Program Manager Robert Walters. "Their removal is crucial to safeguarding the biodiversity of our waterways."

Weighing up to 46 pounds and spanning over three feet in length, the captured bighead carp underscore the urgency of CPW's intervention. Despite their initial introduction over two decades ago, signs of natural reproduction were notably absent, offering a glimmer of hope for containment efforts.

Kyle Battige, senior aquatic biologist for CPW's northeast region, emphasized the pivotal role of public engagement in combating invasive species. "This operation was initiated thanks to a tip from an angler," noted Battige, highlighting the importance of community collaboration in preserving local ecosystems.

Philip Sorensen, CPW District Wildlife Manager for Westminster and Arvada, echoed this sentiment, expressing gratitude for public vigilance. "We rely on the public to report sightings of invasive species in their neighborhoods," stated Sorensen, emphasizing CPW's commitment to addressing environmental threats through proactive measures and community involvement.
