STORYLINE:

The Confucius Institute of Philadelphia University of Jordan celebrated Chinese Language Day on Wednesday as part of activities to mark the Cultural Diversity Day by introducing Chinese language and culture to local primary school students.

Students in grades 1 to 3 from Al-Shouf International Academy Schools learned to speak simple Chinese phrases, tried on traditional costumes, sang Chinese songs, and participated in activities such as paper-cutting.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Arabic): MANAL JARRAR, International programs principal at Al-Shouf International Academy Schools
"Today, we celebrate Cultural Diversity Day as a kind of highlighting of the cultural diversity of our students. We asked the Confucius Institute at Philadelphia University, in cooperation with them, to introduce the Chinese language to the students so that the students become accustomed to using the Chinese language, since the Chinese language is one of the most widely used languages in the world."

SOUNDBITE 2 (Arabic): DIMA AL-MALAHMEH, Jordanian director of the Confucius Institute at Philadelphia University of Jordan
"The goal of the Confucius Institutes in various places is to introduce the Chinese language and Chinese culture. We would like to cultivate a love for Chinese culture and learn about different cultures, especially since Chinese culture is very popular in Jordan because we are generally Eastern societies. Children and young people love the Chinese language and Chinese culture, so we seek to cultivate this and introduce them to this culture through schools as well, not only at the university."
