Oil tea is deemed the name card of Gongcheng Yao Autonomous County in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
Several steps are involved in the preparation of this special tea, including washing, frying, pounding and boiling. Pounding is the essence as the process makes oil tea more aromatic.
Usually, a cup of oil tea marks the start of a day for the local residents.
It is an important cultural symbol of the county and is the essence of local Yao food culture.
In 2022, the oil tea of the Yao ethnic group was included in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity as part of traditional tea processing techniques and associated social practices in China.
Nowadays, oil tea drives the development of cultural tourism industry as well.
Every year, Gongcheng hosts the Oil Tea Cultural Festival with oil tea banquets and oil tea-related dances to attract visitors and carry forward their culture.
