Amidst chaos in a Children's Hospital fire in northern India’s Delhi, firefighters heroically rescued newborn babies, ensuring their safety amidst the blaze.

The incident took place at Nr IIT, Block B Vivek Vihar in East Delhi on May 25.

Visuals showed a fierce fire was raging in the hospital, with flames leaping high and spreading rapidly. The intense heat and thick smoke engulfed the building, creating a terrifying scene of chaos and destruction. The teams of firefighters were actively engaged in extinguishing the fire and rescuing people. Alongside, local residents were also involved in rescue efforts, helping to evacuate people through windows.

According to reports the devastating fire broke out at Baby Care New Born Hospital in East Delhi's Vivek Vihar on Saturday night around 11:32 pm, rapidly intensified due to numerous oxygen cylinders that began to explode, spreading the flames and causing extensive damage.

Talking to Newslions, Atul Garg, Director of Delhi Fire Department said a fire broke out in a baby care hospital, resulting in chaos. Twelve newborns were transferred to East Delhi Advance Care Hospital. Sadly, six newborns were declared dead, one is critical, and five are receiving treatment. The hospital covers an area of 120 square yards. The fire also affected a boutique, an IndusInd Bank, a scooter with registration number DL 5SC 5168, and other nearby buildings, including an optical shop and domestic articles. Additionally, a park and an ambulance with registration number HR 55 R 9779 were also affected. Police officers including ASI Roop Kishor, ACP Jagdish, and DCP Rajeev were present at the scene. The police did not find any emergency exits or fire extinguishers installed on the hospital premises in case of such incidents. The hospital building most likely did not possess a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) issued by the fire department.

Eyewitnesses described a scene of chaos and heroism as local residents and members of the non-profit Shaheed Seva Dal scaled walls and climbed from the rear side of the building to rescue trapped infants. They were soon joined by fire department officials and police.

The tragedy has unveiled numerous lapses in the hospital's safety measures. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Surendra Chaudhary, the facility lacked fire extinguishers and an emergency exit. Additionally, the doctor on duty was not qualified to treat newborns in need of neonatal intensive care, and the hospital had more than the authorized number of oxygen cylinders.
