San Diego, CA, USA - May 27, 2024
On the morning of Monday, May 27, 2024, SD Fire-Rescue dispatchers were inundated with distress calls reporting a fire outbreak at the apartment complex located at 4300 Winona Ave. Responding promptly to the emergency, the crew of engine 17 arrived at the scene to discover heavy smoke billowing from the rear of the four-unit, two-story structure. Reports indicated that occupants were trapped inside various units.
Collaborative efforts ensued, with Engine 10, Truck 10, Engines 26 and 18, and Truck 14 joining forces to execute rescue operations and combat the inferno. Through their valiant endeavors, three individuals were safely extricated from the perilous situation. Medical assessments were promptly administered, resulting in the transportation of two individuals to nearby medical facilities for further treatment.
The immersive video footage captured during the rescue operation elucidates the treacherous conditions encountered by firefighters within smoke-filled environments, where visibility is reduced to zero. Despite the challenges posed by the disorienting surroundings, the responders persevered, utilizing flashlights to navigate through the haze.
While one resident declined assistance from the Red Cross, another was temporarily displaced due to the fire, which was contained to the first-floor apartment of origin. Nevertheless, adjacent units suffered varying degrees of smoke and water damage.
