STORYLINE:
Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry held phone talks with Iran's Acting Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani on Wednesday, discussing the normalization of bilateral relations as well as the ongoing Israeli deadly offensive on the Palestinian Gaza Strip.
"The two ministers agreed on the importance of pursuing the path of developing bilateral relations to ensure that all outstanding issues are addressed, in preparation for restoring relations to normal," said the Egyptian Foreign Ministry in a statement.
Shoukry and Bagheri Kani agreed to work together to restore normal ties "based on the principles of mutual respect and good neighborliness," and to jointly support regional stability, according to the statement.
They also touched on the situation in Gaza and the ongoing mediation of Egypt, Qatar, and the United States to reach a ceasefire deal between Israel and Gaza-ruling Hamas.
Iran and Egypt severed diplomatic relations in 1980 as Egypt signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1979 and later hosted the deposed Iranian shah following the Islamic revolution in Iran in the same year.
In 2023, following the China-brokered Saudi-Iran reconciliation deal, Egypt and Iran engaged in Oman-mediated rounds of talks aimed at restoring ties. Both countries have announced a willingness to mend bilateral ties by settling differences on certain issues.
