Boca Grande, FL, USA - June 1, 2024

In a remarkable display of swift response and lifesaving expertise, a Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater aircrew rescued a child and seven adults on Saturday after their 28-foot boat capsized 36 miles west of Boca Grande.

The distress call came through VHF-FM channel 16 to Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg watchstanders, reporting the sinking vessel and activating an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB).

Responding promptly, the Air Station Clearwater MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter aircrew homed in on the distress signal from one of the boaters' Personal Locator Beacons (PLB). Upon arrival, they spotted the strobe lights of the devices and located all eight individuals, who were wearing life jackets and clinging to a cooler for safety.

With precision and efficiency, the aircrew hoisted each person from the water and transported them to emergency medical services at Venice Municipal Airport. Miraculously, no injuries were reported among the rescued individuals.
