Stone mill explosion causes damage to 280 houses in Thailand
A massive explosion at a stone mill damaged hundreds of houses in southern Thailand.
Footage shows the blast tearing through the stone quarry in Narathiwat province on June 10.
However, the powerful shockwave rippled toward nearby residential areas and caused damage to some 280 homes.
Pongsak Chutichaokul, the manager and majority shareholder of Narathiwat Stone Mill Limited Partnership that owns the stone mill, has apologised to the residents and promised to take care of the repairs.
An insider from the company said the stone mill conducts controlled blasts irregularly, but notifies the relevant agencies in advance through radio and online groups.
An engineer said the cause of the damage is being investigated, adding it was likely caused by miscalculations in the air pressure and explosion intensity.
Residents queued at the Ban Khai School, where the stone mill company was accepting registrations for free repairs on June 11.
Pongsak said: 'We have dispatched teams of workers to repair the damage such as broken glass, light fixtures, and cracked ceilings and walls. Currently, repairs have been completed for more than half of the households. We expect everything to be done in two days.'
This stone mill was registered as a juristic person on December 9, 2006 and has received a 30-year concession from 2022 to 2052 under the name Narathiwat Stone Mill Co., Ltd., which states its business as 'granite mining project for the construction industry.'
