UK: Man Helps Police Officer in Need to Arrest Jewellery Thief in Saffron Walden
Saffron Walden, UK - March 7, 2024
PC Ryan McNamara of Saffron Walden Police expressed gratitude towards members of the public who intervened to assist him in apprehending James Happer, a 51-year-old jewellery thief. The incident unfolded outside Finery and Co jewellers on King Street, where Happer attempted to flee after stealing £30,970 worth of gold and diamond jewellery.
Ryan McNamara recounted the events, stating, "I want to thank the people who provided assistance as I was arresting Happer and helped to ensure that the man responsible for the burglary was held to account. One of the original principles of policing is that the police are the public and the public are the police, and that was certainly the case on that day."
The arrest occurred during one of Ryan's routine foot patrols on March 7, 2024, when he responded to cries of 'Stop! Thief!' and intercepted Happer. Despite facing resistance and physical assault from the offender, Ryan managed to subdue Happer with the help of bystanders until backup arrived.
Following a court hearing where Happer admitted burglary and assaulting an emergency worker, PC Carl Wright described the incident as rare for Saffron Walden and praised Ryan and the public for preventing Happer from profiting from his crime. Happer received an 18-month suspended jail term and various rehabilitation requirements as part of his sentence.
Ryan McNamara concluded, "It’s an absolute privilege and an honour to serve the good people who live and work here in Saffron Walden." His dedication and the community's support were pivotal in resolving the incident swiftly and safely.
