A furious Muslim mob allegedly murdered a local tourist and set his corpse on fire for desecrating the Quran in Pakistan.

The villagers reportedly stormed a police station in the Swat area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where the man was detained for reportedly burning pages of the Islamic holy book on June 20.

Swat District Police Officer Zahid Ullah said: 'We had transferred the alleged accused to the police station, however, the accused was removed from the police station by the enraged public.'

The mob was reported to have converged on the station, egged on by local mosques that broadcasted through loudspeakers the man's reported desecration of the sacred Islamic scripture.

Demanding the release of the suspect, they barged through the gates and overpowered the cops, who were forced to flee as they were pelted with stones.

The villagers then reportedly dragged the man out onto the street, beat him to death with sticks, and then set his corpse ablaze.

Disturbing footage shows the crazed devotees chanting and applauding as flames engulfed the dead man's body.

He was identified as a resident of Punjab who had been staying at a hotel in Madyan.

Officer Zahid said at least eight people were injured, while the police station and a police van were burned during the unrest.

He added that a heavy police presence was deployed in the area as the tense situation was still being brought under control.

It is not the first time locals in predominantly Muslim Pakistan have responded with similar violence to accusations of blasphemy - an offense punishable by death in the hardline Islamist nation.

Just last month, a Christian man, Nazir Masih, 70, was also lynched by a mob in Sargodha for allegedly burning pages of the Quran. He was rescued by police, but died of his injuries on June 2.

In February, a female tourist in Lahore was saved by cops from a furious mob who mistook the calligraphy on her dress as verses from the Quran.
