Oxford Students Attend Criticised Pembroke College Commemoration Ball That Charged 446-Pounds-Per-Ticket
Hundreds of students have made their way home in the early hours of Saturday after attending the Pembroke College Commemoration Ball in the University of Oxford grounds on Friday night.
The revellers first queued up along Rose Place and back onto St Aldate’s road as the prestigious summer ball got underway on Friday 21st of June.
This was the first Commemoration Ball to be held at the college for 5 years. They are also celebrating their 400th anniversary with the college opening back in 1624.
The theme is described as ‘Into Storied Realms’ and is said to promise ‘a night to be remembered for centuries to come’ with the headliner of the night announced as band Scouting For Girls.
Those who made it to 5am had a survivors photo before being released onto the streets clutching bottles of water.
They were promised bacon butties but the vendor left the site early meaning most were left hungry and queued outside McDonald’s and Greggs until they opened at 6am.
The undergraduates made their way home arm-in-arm, helping each other along, some had taken their high heels off and others posed for a group photo.
The ball hit national news after one student, Chloe Pomfret, revealed ticket prices were being sold by the university for up to 446 pounds for the white tie event.
The university hit back stating ticket prices ranged from 106 pounds ‘Community Tickets’ for disadvantaged students. Pembroke Students were charged 166 pounds and non-Pembroke students were charged 196 pounds to the sold out event.
The higher 446 pound tickets were marked as ‘Celebration Tickets’ which were described as a: ‘premium package and donation to subsidise community tickets for those students who couldn’t otherwise attend’
Those attending the ball wore their best Glad Rags, colourful dresses and top hat’s and tail’s were on show to the public who gawked as they walked passed the queuing partygoers.
Many sipped on cans of mixed gin or clasped bottles of wine as they waited in line.
At the front of the queue was a sniffer dog named ‘Where’s Wally’ who was on hand to make sure no illicit substances were taken into the venue.
Spirits were high as they made the most of warm temperatures, but rain showers hit the region for a small period overnight.
Aerial shots of the gathering showed a large white marquee, fairground tents and fairy lighted walkways. There were free bars and food vans.
St John’s Ambulance also had a safe space for those who had partied a little too much.
