Flowers are blooming alongside canals in Bangkok - creating a picturesque scene akin to Venice in Italy.

Footage shows the foliage deep inside the Thai capital on the Klong Saen Saep, which translates as 'extreme stinging' due to the amount of mosquitoes on the waterway.

But city officials are making efforts to at least improve the appearance of the polluted canals in the city with floral decorations.

Bangkok earned the nickname 'Venice of the East' in the 19th century because of its extensive network of canals. These canals, called khlongs in Thai, were once the main transportation routes for the city. People lived and worked along the canals, much like the residents of Venice live alongside their canals.
