A limestone mountain collapsed when a magnitude 2.2 earthquake in Thailand today.

Aerial footage shows the cleavage of the damaged limestone formation, with huge boulders and uprooted trees littering the vicinity at the Somdej Phra Srinagarindra Park in Phang Nga province on June 26.

Authorities have inspected and cordoned off the area, including a canal and a hiker's resting area, as a danger zone.

Chuchote Koykul, mayor of Phang Nga City Municipality, said authorities were assessing the extent of the damage.

"The collapse was likely caused by natural erosion. This year, there was a severe drought followed by continuous rainfalls. In addition, an earthquake occurred in Tambon Bang Toei, which is a neighbouring area, in the middle of the night.

"Therefore, the mountain could not withstand the tremor and collapsed. Phang Nga Municipality will close the risky area."

A magnitude 2.2 earthquake struck Phang Nga province at 2:55 am local time today.

The Earthquake Surveillance Division of the Thai Meteorological Department said it was recorded at a depth of three kilometres, centred in the Bang Toei area.

There were no reports of damage or injuries resulting from the earthquake.
