Vulnerable man runs from flat on fire after incident resulting in him and mom transported to hospital by air ambulance - Derbyshire, UK
A man identified only as Jonny, is claimed to have suffered severe burns after being found engulfed in flames outside his flat following an incident today involving fire and butane gas canisters resulting in him and his mom being transported to hospital in a serious condition by air ambulance. Neighbors report that local services have been repeatedly informed of the dangerous living conditions but failed to take effective action.
Jonny, who has a history of mental health issues and is supported by a social worker, lived in a flat filled with butane gas canisters and was at constant risk from his mother's two pit bulls according to neighbours. The situation deteriorated over several months, with incidents including a dog attack on Jonny and his mother allegedly taking advantage of him.
Neighbors recount a series of alarming events, including Jonny being locked out of his flat by his mother and the police conducting welfare checks. Neighbours described Jonny emerging from his flat on fire, prompting neighbors to intervene and extinguish the flames. He was severely burnt from head to toe and appeared to have lost all his hair in the incident according to witnesses.
One neighbor, who had seen Jonny before the fire, described him as polite and reserved, but struggling with his mental health. Neighbors also revealed that the police would frequently break down Jonny's door when he failed to respond, but the council would leave the door unrepaired, exacerbating his vulnerability.
Social workers have in the past sent cleaners to the flat multiple times, removing piles of butane gas canisters. However, this intervention was not enough to prevent today's tragic incident.
The incident has left other vulnerable residents of Hallam Court unable to access their flats, compounding the distress within the community. One of Jonny's mother's pit bulls escaped during the chaos and was captured by the police, while neighbors suspect the other dog may have died inside the property as it has not been seen.
Witnesses to Jonny's suffering are willing to provide full interviews to authorities and media, hoping to bring attention to the systemic failures that led to this tragedy. Jonny and his mother remain hospitalized in a severe condition, and the community is left grappling with the aftermath of an incident they believe could have been prevented.
