Three teenagers who were swimming through a cave when a flash flood hit leaving them trapped were rescued in the Philippines.

Friends Carl Lawrence Laojan, 18, Shieldo Cruspero, 15, and Mary Rose Quiros, 15, visited Tubang Cave for a dip despite the tropical country approaching its annual monsoon season in Bohol on June 28.

The trio were trapped inside one part of the cave for seven hours when rainwater gushed through and blocked the entrance.

While the two boys could swim through the flood and reach the rescuers, the girl Mary Rose had to be saved by her brother Larry Quiros, 28, who later drowned

Footage shows the two boys being assisted by medics upon reaching the mouth of the cave with rescuers. The officers eventually pulled out Mary Rose, but Larry was already dead when they found her.

Antequera Councilor Johnny Coquilla said: ‘We called their families and rescuers. The kids were trapped in Tubang.'

The Philippine Coast Guard and Bureau of Fire Protection officers also assisted with the rescue.

All three youngsters were taken to Governor Celestino Gallares Medical Centre in Tagbilaran City, where they are recovering, while the older brother Larry's body was taken for funeral arrangements.

Thailand and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are at the start of their annual monsoon rainy season, which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms. The rudimentary infrastructure often struggles with the deluge, leading to widespread flash floods.
