Earth's curvature makes Thames barge appear to be under water off Kent, UK
A Thames sailing barge looked like it was sinking yesterday (June 30) in a rarely seen optical effect off Kent, UK.
The historic vessel is seen sailing underneath the natural horizon due to the Earth's curvature over longer distances.
The barge is seen 'sailing underwater' as it crosses behind Spanish training tall ship 'Juan Sebastián de Elcano'.
As it gets closer the hull can finally be seen above the horizon - first as it passes Shivering Sands forts in the Thames estuary, followed by Red Sands Forts.
The unusual sight was filmed to the far east of Sheerness using a super telephoto lens.
