STORYLINE
Brazil's Supreme Federal Court moved on Tuesday to decriminalise marijuana possession for personal use, which would make the country one of the last nations in Latin America to do so and could reduce its huge prison population.
Judge Jose Antonio Dias Toffoli said on Tuesday he favours decriminalisation, along with five other judges who have voted the same way since deliberations began in 2015. This establishes a majority on the 11-member court. The last two justices to vote must do so before the ruling becomes final, and were expected to do so soon.
The judges must also determine the maximum amount of marijuana that would be considered for personal use, and when the ruling will take effect. It is not yet known how long it will take them to do so.
Judge Rosa Weber said in August that consideration of more than 7,700 similar cases before lower courts had been put on hold in anticipation of the high court's decision.
Casting her vote within hours, Toffoli described her position as somewhere between support and opposition to decriminalisation. At the start of Tuesday's session, he made it clear that his vote was to be interpreted as in favour.
