The body of an American tourist who disappeared in 2002 after an avalanche was found mummified on Huascaran, Peru's highest mountain at 6,768 metres, the official Andina news agency reported on Monday.
The media indicated that the National Police of Peru (PNP) confirmed the discovery of the remains of an American mountaineer in the snowy Huascarán, in the mountains of the Ancash region, who according to the first investigations, would have died buried by the snow 22 years ago after an avalanche in the area.
After receiving the alert of the discovery of a corpse, a team of rescuers from the Department of High Mountain Rescue of the PNP went to the Huascaran and after several hours of searching they found the mummified body, which preserved intact the clothes and climbing tools such as crampons, harnesses and safety ropes.
The body was located at 5,200 metres above sea level, in a high-risk area for avalanches and with many crevasses, which complicated the rescue of the American.
Andina explained that once the rescuers moved him to a lower area, representatives of the Public Prosecutor's Office carried out the removal of the body and ordered his transfer to the morgue for the legal procedures.
