Eversource and United Illuminating, the state’s two largest electrical providers, reported a combined 21,811 outages as of 8 p.m., with most concentrated in Fairfield County.

Shelton had the largest number of disruptions at more than 8,600. Meanwhile, officials reported nearly 4,200 outages in Trumbull, and more than 1,000 in Hamden, Derby and Westport.

Much of the southwestern portion of the state faced damaging winds and heavy rainfall Saturday afternoon amid thunderstorms brought on by what forecasters described as “dangerous" heat and "oppressive" humidity.

The National Weather Service warned that temperatures were expected to reach as high as 90 degrees in some areas, with heat index values near 100. Another round of showers and thunderstorms is expected Sunday, the weather service said.
