Powerful waves slammed the Mui Wo waterfront in Hong Kong at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, as Typhoon Wipha battered the region ahead of its landfall in mainland China. The footage, captured by TC, shows the force of the storm at its peak as waves crash violently onto the shoreline, underscoring the typhoon’s intensity. Typhoon Wipha officially made landfall at around 5:55 p.m. local time in Taishan City, Guangdong Province, according to Chinese state broadcaster CCTV. By that point, the system had weakened to a severe tropical storm, but still packed winds up to 30 meters per second (approx. 108 km/h or 67 mph). In Hong Kong, the city raised its highest storm warning — Typhoon Signal No. 10 — for nearly seven hours before downgrading it to Signal No. 8. Over 110 mm (4 inches) of rain fell within just three hours, grounding hundreds of flights and disrupting transport across the region. The footage from Mui Wo is a stark reminder of the typhoon's reach and the growing vulnerability of coastal communities to extreme weather events intensified by climate change.
