Heron effortlessly swallows unlucky chipmunk whole at family park
A heron effortlessly swallowed a chipmunk whole in a family park.
Braden Artzer was filming birds in Lindo Park, California, USA, in the middle of May when he spotted a heron hunting for prey.
Dramatic footage shows the big-beaked bird pluck an unlucky chipmunk from behind some rocks and holding it easily in the tip of its bill.
After dunking the unfortunate rodent into the lake a couple of times, the heron then gulped down its meal in one go.
Braden said: “I usually watch the heron catch fish, so I can tell when the bird is onto something.
“The heron exhibits great patience and will hang out in one spot, swaying its head to get a better sight of its prey.
“It took the heron just over a minute to eat its meal. Once caught, the heron flew into the lake to dunk the chipmunk, making it easier to consume.
“This is a protocol behaviour where the bird manipulates its food with the environment.
“I've never seen anything like this before. I was fascinated knowing that the heron actually hunted and caught the chipmunk after half an hour of patience.
“Since moving to San Diego last year, I have been studying and learning about many avian, reptile, and insect species commonly found around the county.
“Through video documentation, I can learn more by slowing down and zooming in on footage to understand avian behaviour.”
