A tourist was killed and dozens more injured when a minibus plunged off a cliff near northeast Thailand.

The Cambodian pilgrims had paid homage to the Buddhist monk Luang Pu Suang at the Wat Phrai Phatthana temple in Thailand's Sisaket province when their vehicle lost control on the return trip along a mountain road in Oddar Meanchey, Cambodia, on August 4.

The accident happened near Chalong Veng village, around a kilometre away from the Chong Saeng border checkpoint.

Authorities said one passenger was killed, while 27 others were injured - seven of them critically.

The seven seriously wounded were being treated at Thailand's Sisaket Hospital at the request of Cambodian authorities.

The relative of one of the passengers said the minibus was part of a convoy of around 2,000 pilgrims who had arrived in Thailand.

Officials believe a brake malfunction had caused the accident.
