Italy: Father And Son Rescued From Side Of 5,500-Ft-High Cliff
Province of Lecco, Italy - August 17, 2024
This is the suspenseful moment firefighters rescue a father and his seven-year-old son stranded on a steep cliff after they ventured along a dangerous route reserved only for experienced climbers.
The rescue took place on a rocky outcrop at an altitude of 1,700 metres (5,577 feet) in a ravine on Mount Resegone, between the provinces of Bergamo and Lecco, in Italy, on the morning of 17th August.
Rescuers from the Speleo Alpino Fluviale (SAF) team of the fire department took off in a helicopter after receiving a distress call and managed to reach the stranded father-son duo.
The pair had reportedly gone on a risky route that is recommended only to experienced climbers and became stuck on a gully for hours.
Thankfully, neither got seriously injured as they wisely waited out rescuers on the steep cliffside.
Video footage of the tricky operation shows the helicopter pilot carefully approaching the rockface where another firefighter was lowered via a rope.
With his help, the man and his little son were airlifted from the cliff and brought to safety.
It remains unclear whether the father intentionally led his son along the dangerous hike or if they mistakenly took that route.
Both were reported to be in good health.
