Swarms of mayflies causes chaotic scenes in Hanshou, Hunan Province, as they descended on a bridge.

Footage from September 1 shows the insects crashing into vehicles sounding like hailstones.

According to eyewitnesses, the mayflies were drawn to the bridge by the streetlights, covering almost the entire surface. When their bodies were crushed by vehicles, they became sticky, making the bridge dangerously slippery. This caused several cars to skid, resulting in rear-end collisions and other accidents.

In response to this emergency, the Hanshou County government quickly activated an emergency plan. Traffic police arrived on the scene to direct traffic and prevent further accidents, while sanitation and urban management departments dispatched personnel and equipment to clean the bridge. After several hours of work, the mayflies were cleared, and traffic gradually returned to normal.

Experts explain that mayflies are aquatic insects that require high-quality water environments. Their large numbers often indicate good local water quality and ecological conditions.

The mayflies gathering on the Yuan River Bridge may be related to the water quality and environment in the area. Mayflies have a very short lifespan, and they swarm together for mating and laying eggs, so while this phenomenon is rare, it is also understandable.
