STORYLINE:

Construction began Wednesday on a nuclear power project in the southern Chinese port city of Fangchenggang, according to SPIC Guangxi Nuclear Power Limited Company.

The Bailong Nuclear Power Project, located on a peninsula in Fangchenggang City, Guangxi, will create six nuclear power units at the million-kilowatt level. The planned overall capacity is 8.62 million kilowatts.

About 120 billion yuan has been invested in the project. According to the company, the first phase of the project will involve building independently designed and domestically produced third-generation nuclear power technology with a single unit capacity of 1.25 million kilowatts.

When the two nuclear power units of the first phase are put into operation in 2030, annual power generation will stand at about 20 billion kWh. This can reduce annual standard coal consumption by about 6 million tons and lower carbon dioxide emissions by about 16 million tons.

The emission reduction effect is equivalent to planting about 44,000 hectares of broad-leaved forests. This will play a positive role in optimizing Guangxi's energy structure and promoting energy savings and emissions reductions, the company said.
