Scooter Tossing: The Strange Trend That Keeps Polluting the Sea - Authorities in Thessaloniki, a seaside city in northern Greece, are taking action following reports that dozens of electric scooters have been tossed into the water, mostly by teenagers.

Municipal authorities launched an operation on Wednesday, 11.09.2024, to recover electric scooters and bikes, available for short-term rental through mobile applications, that had been lying on the bottom of the Thermaikos Gulf for years, polluting the waters.

Corroded by saltwater, these rusty scooters pose a major environmental threat as they leak harmful chemicals into the water. Divers submerge to collect the scooters, carefully gathering them from the sea floor. Once brought to the surface, the scooters are piled into boats and transported to shore, where a crane lifts them into a truck for proper disposal.

Experts say lithium batteries, found inside the popular two-wheeled vehicles, contain environmentally hazardous substances that are toxic to the aquatic environment.
