Swedish man pleads for help after losing more than £8,000 to Thai 'gold digger' on dating app
A furious Swedish boyfriend is pleading for help after his Thai girlfriend allegedly scammed him out of more than 8,000 GBP.
Ahmet, 42, said he started chatting with the unnamed woman through a popular dating app while he was in Thailand on June 17. Despite never having met in person, the Thai native wanted them to be married by the end of July.
Lovestruck Ahmet said he agreed 'because he was enchanted by her beauty'. He added that the woman asked him to wire 359,000 THB (8,170 GBP) to her account to pay for half of the wedding expenses. He transferred the money without hesitation 'because he believed their love was true'.
The couple finally met at a resort in Sukhothai province on August 25, just a few days before their wedding. However, Ahmet claimed his girlfriend suddenly ghosted him and never returned to their room.
Ahmet said he waited several days before the Thai woman called him again to proceed with the marriage. However, instead of an elaborate wedding, she reportedly insisted to do a traditional wrist-tying ceremony on August 29, with a local rescue worker as a witness 'since the village headman was unavailable'.
Bizarrely, the newlywed wife asked the rescue worker to delete all of his social media photos about the event.
Ahmet said a man claiming to be the Thai woman's real husband later called and threatened to sue him for having an affair with his wife.
The baffled Swedish tourist filed a report with Ekapop Luengprasert, an adviser to the interior minister and manager of a local social media complaint page, claiming police refused to accept his complaint.
Speaking at a press conference in Bangkok on September 5, Ahmet said he wanted the Thai girlfriend punished to prevent her from scamming other men.
He said: 'It's not stopping with me. Now they know they can cheat people for money. They took so much money from me. They won't stop here. They will keep lying to other people if nobody tells them to stop. I wanted to take my life and kill myself after that.
'I hope she goes to prison, and her family too... Her husband working with her, her mother, maybe her sister. I know her whole family is working together to lie to tourists like me.'
Similarly, an Indian husband has sworn off Thai women after his wife kicked him out of the house and left him with nothing but the family fridge.
Radesh Siam, 52, reported his spouse Nuchraporn, 53, to the Samut Prakan police following their bitter split on September 3.
He claimed he had invested much time and money into their family only for Nuchraporn to file for divorce. He said: 'Now I am wary of loving Thai women. Although I love Thailand and want to keep living here, I also want to warn foreigners not to invest too much in Thai women.'
The Thai housewife said she wanted to separate as Radesh allegedly subjected her to verbal abuse daily. She added that their rift stemmed from his dislike of her children with her previous husband.
