A landslide caused by heavy rains killed three miners in the Philippines.

Mud loosened by torrential downpours buried the workers who were resting in their makeshift hut in the mountainous province of Benguet on June 22.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene after receiving a report at around 6:30 pm. They found the area covered in rocks, wooden debris and wet earth.

Heavy machinery was deployed to dig through the carnage. However, the miners were found lifeless under the carnage.

The Itogon Fire Station said in a statement: 'Despite the responders' efforts, three fatalities were confirmed dead during the retrieval phase of the operation. The identities of the victims have not yet been released pending notification of their families.'

A 16-year-old boy who was also at the site managed to flee but was injured by falling debris.

Authorities warned residents in high-risk areas to remain vigilant amid continued rainfall.

The Philippines and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are in their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms in the afternoon leading to widespread flash floods.
