STORYLINE:
The Ivorian government and international non-profit organizations on Saturday carried out a street cleaning activity in Abidjan to mark World Cleanup Day.
World Cleanup Day is an annual global event that is marked every third Saturday in September with the aim of combating the global solid waste problem.
SOUNDBITE 1 (French): GERVAIS KOFFI, Volunteer
"We hope to convey the message of not littering, whether it's garbage or plastic bags, and not polluting the environment. We use this demonstration activity to help everyone see and further raise people's awareness of environmental protection, encouraging them to avoid littering."
SOUNDBITE 2 (French): MATHIAS BEUGRE, Volunteer
"I believe that through such actions, people will become aware, even if it cannot change them, but as time goes by, people's environmental awareness will increase and they will try to do the same as others."
SOUNDBITE 3 (French): MARIE ODETTE, Volunteer
"We are here not only to raise awareness among the population but also to set an example for local residents to show them the importance of cleaning and the risk of plastic. Because people are not informed that plastic is not bad to use, but it is the use we make of it afterward that pollutes the planet. So we came to raise awareness and set an example by asking them not to throw plastics in the gutters that will end up in the lagoon."
Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Abidjan.
