Italy - September 23, 2024

In a daring rescue operation on Monday, September 23, 2024, the Arezzo Fire Department utilized their helicopter, known as Drago, to save an injured man in the dense forests of Alpe di Poti.

The emergency services were alerted around noon after the man suffered an ankle injury while hiking. The rugged terrain and dense foliage of the area made ground rescue impractical, necessitating the deployment of the Drago helicopter.

The skilled helicopter crew swiftly located the injured hiker, provided necessary medical stabilization on-site, and then airlifted him to the helipad at the Arezzo Fire Department's helicopter base. An ambulance was waiting at the ready and promptly transported the individual to Arezzo Hospital for further treatment.

This operation underscores the critical role of aerial rescue units in remote or challenging environments, where traditional ground rescue might be too slow or hazardous. The quick response and coordination between the fire department's aerial and medical teams likely prevented a more severe outcome for the hiker.
