North Charleston, United States - June 26, 2024

In a haunting glimpse into the depths of the ocean, newly released video footage shows robot arms delicately maneuvering through the debris of the ill-fated Titan submersible. The video, disclosed by the Marine Board of Investigation, captures the somber salvage operation of the vessel's remnants nearly 2.5 miles below the surface where it met its tragic end last June.

The footage, part of an ongoing public hearing by the Coast Guard, illustrates the meticulous work of remotely operated vehicles retrieving parts of the submersible, eerily juxtaposed with a shark's curious approach to the wreckage. This two-minute clip adds to the mounting evidence presented in the investigation into the disaster that claimed the lives of five individuals on June 18, 2023, during a mission to explore the Titanic's wreck.

Guillermo Sohnlein, a co-founder of OceanGate, the company behind the Titan, expressed hope at the hearings that the catastrophe would not deter future deep-sea explorations. Despite his departure from OceanGate prior to the incident, Sohnlein maintains that "this can't be the end of deep ocean exploration."

Contrarily, David Lochridge, the former operations director of OceanGate, painted a grim picture of the company's operations. He clashed with co-founder Stockton Rush, who perished in the disaster, over safety concerns and what Lochridge described as the company's singular focus on profit over science and safety. Lochridge's refusal to certify the Titan due to significant faults led to his dismissal from OceanGate.

The hearings, which began with a revelation that the Titan had not undergone standard independent safety reviews, are set to continue, with further testimonies expected to shed light on the decisions leading up to the implosion. Amber Bay, OceanGate's former director of administration, is among those scheduled to testify, potentially providing more insight into the internal workings of the company at the time.

OceanGate, now paused in operations, has been cooperative with the investigations, as confirmed by the Coast Guard. The company's future, along with that of deep-sea exploration, remains a topic of intense scrutiny and speculation as the world watches the aftermath of what has become a pivotal moment in maritime history.
