A beached whale stuck in a fisherman's net was saved and pushed back into the waters by locals.

Footage shows the 30ft marine animal lying on its back in the shallows while residents helped return it to the depths in Ilocos Norte, the Philippines, on September 16.

It took at least 12 men to assist as the animal was too heavy and the waves were too strong.

They successfully released the whale shark into the sea and swam away without injuries.

Resident Jaypee Calipjo Sacsac said: ‘The whale shark swam near the net with the smaller fish and was accidentally caught.'

The whale shark is one of the largest fish species in the world, that currently listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
