A toddler sent a stick hurtling towards his friends in an amusing pinata fail.

Footage shows the little boy trying to smash the pot hanging overhead but to no avail during a birthday party in Leyte, the Philippines, on October 8.

However, on his second try, the impatient youngster let go of the pole, which flew towards other kids.

One of his playmates was hit at the back of his head but was not seriously hurt, scratching the spot as he laughed with others.

Neighbour Francis Vega said: 'We did not expect that would happen.'

Similar to the pinata, the game is called 'Pukpok Palayok' and is often played during festive occasions, especially birthdays. The Filipino version uses a clay pot rather than a colourful paper figure.
