Watch China’s first suspended maglev train floating through city
Footage shows China's first suspended maglev train appearing to float through Wuhan on January 26.
Unlike traditional maglev trains, the locomotive in Wuhan hangs from an overhead rail, looking like an inverted vehicle gliding through the air.
The communist nation currently has three operational maglevs in Shanghai, Changsha, and Beijing.
The first operational maglev train was developed in Germany. The Transrapid, a high-speed maglev system, was introduced in the 1970s, with its first successful prototype running on a test track in 1979.
They are a type of high-speed transportation that operates using magnetic forces to levitate above the tracks, eliminating physical contact with the rail.
Because there’s no physical contact, maglev trains can achieve very high speeds with less noise, less wear, and greater energy efficiency.
