This is the incredible moment a herd of elephants were seen on a morning stroll through a village in India.

Footage shows five jumbos embling through a residential area in Kankhal, Haridwar, Uttarakhand, on Saturday, November 2.

The bulls reportedly did not harm anyone and peacefully returned to the woodland through the colony roads.

Residents breathed a sigh of relief when the animals left without incident.

Haridwar is surrounded by the Rajaji Tiger Reserve and forest areas.

The sub-continent has at least 30,000 wild elephants - more than any other country and approximately 60 per cent of the world's entire Asian elephant population.

Many more elephants are held in captivity in India. They are used for religious events and weddings.
