On May 9, 2024, a Bangladesh Air Force Yak-130 fighter jet training aircraft crashed in the Karnaphuli River near the Patenga Navy Boat Club in Chattogram, Bangladesh, killing squadron leader Asim Jawad and critically injuring another pilot. Officials suspect a mechanical malfunction caused the crash, which occurred after the plane flew over Patenga, an area close to the Bay of Bengal. Police confirmed Jawad's death during treatment. A video shared online captured various views of the incident.
