The Global Panda Partners 2024 (GPP) conference brought together government agencies, professionals, and the general public as panda partners under the theme of "Harmonious Coexistence Between Man and Nature."
Over 380 attendees from more than 30 countries and regions discussed topics such as ecological civilization, panda culture, and international cultural tourism, jointly exploring a scientific path that prioritizes ecology and pursues green development.
SOUNDBITE 1 (English): IRINA BOKOVA, Former UNESCO Director-General
"I think Sichuan Province and Chengdu have the extraordinary luck to have pandas here. But we know that biodiversity does not have geographical boundaries and political boundaries. So I think this type of cooperation is extremely important."
The joint work to protect pandas is like a bridge between scientists, between researchers, between children, between students, between different communities. So I do believe that panda is a great messenger of peace in international cooperation."
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): KIRSTEN GRIFFITHS CONRAD, Principal of the Singapore-based global wildlife conservation organization AsiaCat
"I've seen China doing a lot of this by inviting foreign scholars and students to come to China to learn, and China also sends its scientists overseas. So I think by enhancing more collaboration like that, I know China has set up some expert panels on a number of species."
SOUNDBITE 3 (English): DAVID ATETI TEAABO, Kiribati's Ambassador to China
"Incredible studies have been undertaken by the Chinese government and the experts. The panda is a symbol of friendship. Ecologically, the panda is a symbol of conservation. And environmentally, the panda is a symbol of harmony."
Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Chengdu, China.
