An abandoned newborn baby was discovered in a waiting room at a railway station in India.

Footage shows female officers from the Government Railway Police (GRP) carrying the infant at Agra Cantt Railway Station in Uttar Pradesh on Monday, December 2.

Passengers immediately began searching for the baby after hearing its faint cries, only to find it lying outside the waiting area of the station with its umbilical cord still attached.

The infant was transported to SN Medical College for medical attention, and reports state that it is in stable condition after being admitted to the hospital's intensive care unit.

Authorities said that the incident occurred on Sunday night, December 1, when a cruel mother gave birth to the baby outside the toilet in the waiting room and immediately left the scene.

The police have filed a complaint and launched a search to locate the newborn's mum.

Despite the interest from individuals at the train station who offered to care for the infant, the officers have retained custody of the baby for its well-being.
