Thai-German actress charged with drunk driving after 'refusing alcohol test'
A Thai-German actress was charged with drink driving after she allegedly refused to take an alcohol test.
Marie Broenner, 33, was pulled over for an inspection at a police checkpoint in Bangkok, in the early hours of August 24.
She was driving a green Porsche with her boyfriend, well-known real estate businessman Asakon Singsikornkun, and his daughter from another partner.
However, the celebrity reportedly refused to be tested for alcohol, sparking an hour-long standoff as the couple remained inside their car with officers repeatedly knocking on their windows.
When they finally stepped out, the aggressive boyfriend allegedly shouted 'you don't know I am' at the baffled officers.
He then demanded that Marie be allowed to use the restroom first. He also reportedly tried to threaten police, claiming he 'had connections with senior officers'.
Footage shows a furious Asakon insulting and arguing with police as his daughter tried to control him. A distraught Marie, wearing a brown top, was seen visibly distressed amid the chaos.
The pair were taken to the Wang Thong Lang district station but Marie still allegedly declined to take a breathalyser test.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Juthaphong Chandilokchote said: 'Based on her behaviour and condition, she was charged with drink-driving. She was later released with bail of 20,000 Baht and ordered to appear in court on August 25.'
Asakon was booked for insulting and obstructing police from performing their duty.
The North Bangkok District Court heard both cases on Monday. Marie was handed a two-month prison sentence suspended for two years, a fine of 4,000 Baht (92 GBP), and had her driver's licence suspended.
She was fined an additional 1,000 Baht (23 GBP) for disobeying police orders.
Her boyfriend was sentenced to one month in prison, suspended for one year, and a fine of 10,000 Baht (223 GBP).
Despite being one of the wealthiest countries in Asia, Thailand suffers from chronic underinvestment in its highways and education, contributing to its poor road safety levels. Only a handful of African countries are worse.
The country has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.
