A large cordon was placed on Portland Road as it connects with Shireland Road after a 20-year-old cyclist was mowed down and seriously injured on Wednesday 4th December 2024 evening.

An orange coloured bicycle was left under a bus shelter and a discarded takeaway was pointed out by one police officer to others as more arrived on scene.

The 24-year-old driver of the Audi which hit the man and fled from the scene, was later arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

The collision happened just hours after a man and teenager were stabbed on a bus on Warwick Road in the Sparkhill area of the city.

WEST MIDS POLICE STATEMENT:

‘We have made an arrest after a man was seriously injured following a collision in Birmingham.

‘We were called at around 7.10pm last night (4 Dec) to Portland Road to a collision involving a black Audi A7 and a cyclist.

‘The cyclist, a man in his 20s, was taken to hospital with potentially life changing injuries.

‘The driver of the Audi fled the scene. ‘Following further enquiries, we recovered the vehicle and detained a 24-year-old man on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

‘Detective Sergeant Paul Hughes from our Serious Collision Investigation Unit said:

‘We are appealing for any witnesses in the area at the time to come forward. If you have any CCTV footage or dash cam footage then please send it to us.’
