Woman who lost 2st with Mounjaro says it will give NHS patients 'new lease of life'
A woman who lost more than two stone taking weight-loss drug Mounjaro says making it available on the NHS will give people "a new lease of life."
Millie Valentina, 28, started taking the injections
- which is also known as Tirzepatide - earlier this year and has gone from a size 16 to a size 12.
She currently pays around £160 a month for the weight-loss drug, but it was announced last week that it will soon be available on the NHS in England.
Millie said: "I think it will definitely benefit people. Obesity in the UK is an epidemic and as a nation we have failed with nutrition. "
"Having the option to go onto something like this and it be funded, is an incredible step forward for people. "
"It gives new people a new lease of life. I am a pretty confident person no matter what size I am, but I'm even more confident. "
"My clothes are now getting smaller and I'm having to buy new things, which is so nice."
Millie first started taking Mounjaro at the start of June and she now injects herself with the drug every Saturday.
When she started taking it, her BMI was 31 but the NHS will be enrolling it out to people who have a BMI that is 35 or more.
Millie thinks that although it being rolled out is a "step forward", she said she wouldn't be able to benefit from it as her BMI isn't high enough. "
The social media specialist said: "I think it's a step forward but I don't think the way they are introducing it isn't the most ideal. "
"I know that the NHS historically is over run and they don't have enough resources and staff - that's completely understandable as there's a lot of people in this country."
"But to be rolling it out over 12 years, that's a long time. "
"It will be presented to people who have a BMI of 35, when you go privately you have to have a BMI over 30. "
"So I'm not quite sure why they've not followed the guidelines of the manufacturers."
Millie weighed 15st 8lb before taking the weight loss drug but is now a trim 12st 12lb - but she doesn't think she would have lost the weight without Mounjaro.
She said: "I have a history, like most women, of yo-yo dieting and I can't remember the last time I wasn't on a diet. "
"I've gone through so many different types of diets, so my perception on how to lose weight in a healthy way was just so different. "
"I've lost weight in the past but I've always gained it back and then gained more. "
"I've had personal trainers who have helped me track my calories using 'My Fitness Pal' and I would get really overwhelmed with it. "
"Being on this medication, has taken away my obsession with food."
Alongside taking Mounjaro, Millie, of Manchester, tries to exercise as much as she can and will go to reformer pilates classes and yoga.
She said: "You don't need to exercise on this because the weight will still come off. "
"However the manufacturers advise that you do incorporate exercise where possible, so you do have a healthier lifestyle. "
"One of the side affects is that you lose muscle mass when you lose the weight, so to build the muscle up, they recommend that you exercise. "
"I did the odd gym class for the first few months but I did suffer with tiredness for the first few months. "
"I've started integrating exercise back into my routine so I've started going to reformer pilates classes at my gym and I do yoga. "
"I'm also hoping to get back into running."
