Steel pipes installed on park benches to prevent migrant workers from sleeping on them are now set to be removed after sparking a furious backlash.

Footage shows the modified chairs in Zhenchuan Good People Park, Kunshan Development Zone, Jiangsu Province, China.

Residents explained that the measures were implemented by park officials to stop day labourers from nearby communities from using the benches as makeshift beds, claiming it affected the city's appearance.

A local worker confirmed to local reporters that the park was a popular gathering spot for migrant workers, many of whom camped or slept on the benches during harsh weather after working late.

Worker A Fei said: 'The benches were welded in late October, and patrols were arranged to drive people away.'

Following collective disapproval, officials bowed to public pressure, releasing a statement acknowledging the alterations and announcing that the barriers would be removed.

The Kunshan Development Zone Management Office said in a December 4 statement: 'Recently, some netizens raised concerns about park benches being welded with steel pipes.

'After investigation, the reported situation was found to be true.

'The partition handrails installed on the park benches will be immediately removed.

'We thank our netizen friends for their supervision and the active participation of citizens in urban management.

'Moving forward, we will strengthen the management of public facilities in the area, provide genuine care and support to relevant personnel, and work together to create a harmonious and beautiful urban environment.'
