STORYLINE:

An expert with Macao Polytechnic University said the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) government has made significant efforts in cultural heritage protection to boost the region's future sustainable development.

Lin Faqin made the remarks in an interview with Xinhua as Macao prepares to celebrate the 25th anniversary of its return to the motherland on Dec. 20.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): LIN FAQIN, Professor, Macao Polytechnic University; President of Oral History Association of Macao
"We can see that the overall protection of Macao's historical buildings goes beyond just the traditional European-style public buildings and churches. It also includes the preservation of traditional Chinese culture, such as temples. These have received comprehensive protection. Specifically, we can see the restored historical buildings in Macao's different districts."

SOUNDBITE 2 (Chinese): LIN FAQIN, Professor, Macao Polytechnic University; President of Oral History Association of Macao
"Looking back over the past 25 years, I believe the government has made significant efforts in cultural heritage protection. For instance, at the institutional level, there's a cultural heritage protection law, which has gradually expanded the focus from merely protecting historical buildings to include both tangible and intangible cultural heritage.
Whether at the national level, or for the Macao SAR government, or within Macao's society, there is a strong understanding that cultural history, as a resource, is a core driving force for Macao's future sustainable development. Therefore, we must make dedicated efforts to develop sound planning and a clear roadmap in this regard, and then implement impactful projects that yield tangible results, thereby contributing to the moderate diversification of Macao's economy."
