A Portuguese observer has hailed Macao's role in facilitating cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking countries.

"Macao has played a very important role in the past. It has a connection between Portugal and China, and even I would say between Asia and Europe, and between the East and the West. So this place is where these completely different cultures and civilizations would meet and share knowledge and commerce, trade, and ideas, and (it is) a very unique place.
So this role of connection between different countries and cultures that was played in the past is still played by Macao in the present through this idea of having Macao as a platform for connection between China and the Portuguese-speaking countries. And, of course, I do believe that in the future this will still be the case."
