Man arrested after speeding car crashed into pedestrian crossing, seriously injuring two people in Northfield

Collision investigation officers at the scene of a serious crash at the Black Horse Junction of Frankley Beeches Road and Sir Herbert Austin Way, Northfield near Birmingham on Monday 16 December.

A speeding driver hit a pedestrian crossing and two pedestrians, both in their 60's, who were rushed to Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The crash happened outside a Sainsbury’s and closed to the Northfield town centre. A man has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.

WEST MIDLANDS POLICE STATEMENT (18/12/24): We're appealing for witnesses following a serious collision in Northfield.

Two pedestrians were struck by a black Mercedes near the junction of Frankley Beeches Road, and Sir Herbert Austin Way, at just before 1pm on Monday (16 February).

A man and a woman, both aged in their 60s, were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Sadly, their conditions have deteriorated and the injuries are now considered to be life-threatening to them both.

A 52-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and he's since been released under investigation while enquiries continue.

Detective Sergeant Paul Hughes, from our Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "A man and a woman have been left with very serious injuries and our thoughts are with them and family members at this time.

"We've already spoken to a number of potential witnesses but we know there were a lot of other people in the area at the time. We'd urge them to come forward so we can establish what happened."

WEST MIDS AMBULANCE STATEMENT (16/12/24): We were called to reports of an RTC at the junction of Bristol Road and Frankley Beeches Road in Northfield at 12.55pm.

"Two ambulances, two paramedic officers, a MERIT trauma doctor, critical care paramedic and the Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford were sent to the scene.

"On arrival, crews discovered a car and two pedestrians had been involved in a collision.

"A man and woman were treated by medics for serious injuries and conveyed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for further treatment."
