Spain: Human Trafficking and Drug Empire Unraveled: 36 Arrested in Spain's Deadly Marijuana and Cockfighting Syndicate
Barcelona, Spain - December 19, 2024 A large-scale operation led by the Spanish National Police, in collaboration with the Mossos de Esquadra, has dismantled a criminal organization involved in human trafficking, forced labor in illegal marijuana plantations, and underground cockfighting rings. The operation, which involved over 750 law enforcement officers, led to the arrest of 36 individuals from various nationalities across Barcelona and Castellón. The criminal group exploited vulnerable migrants, mainly from Latin American countries, by deceiving them with promises of well-paid jobs in Spain. Upon arrival, victims were forced to work in illegal indoor marijuana farms under harsh and exploitative conditions. They were told they owed up to 4,600 euros for their transportation and must repay this debt by working for the organization. In addition to marijuana cultivation, the group was also involved in the breeding and training of fighting cocks, organizing illegal events for profit. Authorities uncovered 168 fighting cocks, many in poor conditions, and dismantled 15 marijuana plantations. The group had illegally consumed electricity equivalent to the power used by 1,200 homes, with a fraud amounting to over one million euros. Investigators also seized firearms, large quantities of drugs, and cash during 35 raids, highlighting the extensive criminal activities of the gang. The investigation is ongoing, and further arrests are expected as authorities continue to dismantle the network.
