STORYLINE:
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty has discussed developments in Lebanon with Jean-Yves Le Drian, France's special envoy to the Middle Eastern country. The conversation, which took place by phone, came just two days before the Lebanese Parliament convenes on Thursday to elect a new president.
Abdelatty stressed the need to reach a consensus that ends the presidential vacuum and frees Lebanon from any external dictates. Noting that Egypt will continue to provide all forms of support to Lebanon during this critical stage, the minister emphasized the importance of working to empower Lebanese national institutions.
Lebanon has endured a presidential vacuum since October 2022. With a currency in free fall and poverty rates soaring, the country continues to grapple with a financial crisis that the World Bank has dubbed as one of the worst in modern history.
