Time-lapse footage shows continued ash emissions at restive Kanlaon Volcano in the Philippines
The restive Kanlaon Volcano continued spewing ash as authorities warned of a possible magmatic eruption in the Philippines.
Time-lapse footage shows the volcano belching a dark gray plumes that reached up to 1,000 feet on January 8.
State seismological agency PHIVOLCS said the ash emission event lasted 29 minutes long and 14 volcanic earthquakes were recorded.
The volcano also emitted 2,924 tonnes of sulfur dioxide as of January 7.
Kanlaon, an 8,100ft stratovolcano that straddles the provinces of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental, has been spewing ash and sulfur dioxide at increased rates since it erupted in June.
Its last magmatic eruption was in 1902.
Alert Level 3 remains in effect, indicating that magma is near the surface and could escalate into further explosive eruptions.
Locals are advised to evacuate within a 6-km radius of the volcano's summit.
The Philippines is an archipelago of more than 7,000 islands inside the Pacific 'Ring of Fire' where the majority of Earth's volcano eruptions and earthquakes happen.
