Pet cats in Japan sensed an earthquake before it happened.

Dozens of furry felines reacted moments before a 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck Beppu, Oita Prefecture, on January 13.

CCTV footage shows the cats lounging on their beds, with some sleeping on racks, when they suddenly stand up and gather together.

Research suggests that cats may detect earthquakes early due to their ability to sense vibrations and low-frequency sounds generated by shifting tectonic plates. They may also perceive changes in the Earth's magnetic field or gas emissions.

Local media reported that the earthquake prompted a tsunami advisory for the Miyazaki and Kochi prefectures.
