Davos, Switzerland - January 18, 2025 Climate justice activists disrupted access to the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos with bold protests, including road blockades and dyeing local waterways green. Around 350 participants staged a peaceful sit-in on the main access road, halting traffic while highlighting what they called the forum's complicity in global crises. The Davos Lake and the Landwasser River were tinted green using biodegradable dye, a symbolic act to denounce WEF’s alleged greenwashing. Activists accused the forum of masking the environmental and social damage fueled by its participants. “The civil resistance against this summit of injustice is long overdue,” said Alex Sattler. “The WEF is where the wealthy and powerful profit from crises and exploitation, particularly at the expense of the Global South.” Protesters criticized the forum for being undemocratic and enabling neocolonial practices. They argued that voices from crisis-hit regions were sidelined in favor of corporate interests, perpetuating inequality and environmental harm. “So green like the lake and river, the WEF couldn’t even dream of being,” said Tonia S., a participant in the demonstration. She condemned the forum’s sustainability claims as deceptive, stating, “Greenwashing obscures the roots of these crises. We need a true system overhaul with real solutions.” The protests, organized by the Swiss group StrikeWEF, included creative actions such as pop-up demonstrations targeting corporations like Yara and Palantir. Activists accused these companies of exploitative practices and criticized the WEF for providing them a platform. The WEF, set to begin January 20, 2025, faces increasing backlash from those demanding a global system that prioritizes people and the planet over profit.
